Bacterial vaginosis also known as (BV) is a very common condition of the vagina caused by various bacteria. It is not just as many think an infection caused by one unique type of bacterium.

  • The most common symptom of BV is  vaginal discharge. It is a fact that BV is the most common cause of vaginal discharge in women. The discharge is normally a whitish grey in colour and often has a fishy odour. The odour may become more noticeable when having sex. The discharge is known to increase after a period and also in many cases after sex.
  • Many women do not have soreness with Bacterial Vaginos.
  • a high percentage of women (up to 50%) with BV do not even have any of  the symptoms.  BV in many cases is found by chance when vaginal swabs are taken  for other reasons.

It must be made clear that BV is not the only reason for vaginal discharge. Other conditions such as yeast infections (Thrush) can casue vaginal discharge.
